TikTok video purporting to depict the demolition of a plaza on Lobito Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja has been discredited by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
FCTA claimed the video in question is an intentional attempt to disseminate misinformation and create unwarranted concern among people, stressing that the film was recorded two years ago, in 2021, and the building portrayed was not demolished.
Instead of demolition, the Department of Development Control found a violation in the building’s use, according to a statement signed by Anthony Ogunleye, Director of Press, Office of the FCT Minister.
The statement continues, “Thereafter, proper steps were taken to address the issue in a responsible manner.” The building was not taken down, despite what the footage may have led you to believe. Instead, the illegal part was taken out to make things legal.
Please find attached a photo taken just today showing that the building is still there for your reference. The FCTA is vigilant in its enforcement of rules to protect the community’s citizens.
The FCTA has spoken out against the purposeful dissemination of incorrect information, warning that it threatens public safety.
More upsetting perhaps is the racial overtones present in many of the offensive films,” the statement continued. This sort of prank has no positive effect and instead sows seeds of distrust and anxiety.
FCTA strongly encourages those spreading false information to stop doing so, as their efforts benefit no one.
