It has been reported that the police in Ogun State have been working in collusion with land pirates.
The assembly requested an investigation into the illegal arrest and detention of innocent Ogun residents on trumped-up accusations by the police in collusion with some suspected land grabbers in the State from Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of the Police.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, other MPs took turns describing widespread incidences of land-grabbing in their districts, prompting Speaker Olakunle Oluomo to make the appeal.
Members were weighing in on the second reading of an amendment to a state law prohibiting the encroachment of private interests on public land when this conversation arose.
The Speaker claims that hundreds of innocent Ogun State citizens are currently being held in police custody at facilities in both Lagos’ Alagbon and Abuja’s Force Headquarters.
This, the Speaker stated, was “due to the connivance of land grabbers with some security agents against innocent members of the public.”
Oluomo begged IGP Egbetokun to intervene, saying that people shouldn’t have to go through the ordeal of false accusations just because they live in Ogun.
Land disputes, according to Oluomo, should be taken to court, and the governor promised that a special task force will be established by the state government to deal with such cases under the new amendment.
Lawmakers emphasized in their numerous statements that the state’s peace, growth, and development had been negatively impacted by land grabbers’ actions, highlighting the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to combating the problem.
