Universities in Nigeria are suffering a major staff problem as hundreds of instructors depart to seek brighter pastures in foreign nations despite a high number of retirements at the varsities.
of separate interviews with newsmen on Sunday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapters corroborated this, saying the scarcity was driven by a rise of teachers fleeing Nigeria and concerns over the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.
About one hundred professors left Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto, according to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), while the Federal University of Gusau in Zamfara estimated a need for one thousand professors to fill the vacancies.
After 27 professors quit two departments at the University of Lagos and 100 employees at the University of Uyo fled the country, the union at the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Ogun State, reported that the university had more than 350 academic vacancies.
The union claims that the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology is losing both academic and non-academic staff members, and that there are more than 500 academic openings at the University of Ilorin in Kwara State.
Dr. Rotimi Olorunsola, the union chairman of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology in Okitipupa, Ondo State, said that a large number of faculty and staff had left the institution.
