On Friday, at least eight people were reportedly killed in a car crash in the community of Oke Onigbin, located in the Irepodun Local Government of Kwara State, on the Omu Aran-Ilorin route.
“A fatal road traffic accident occurred on Friday evening at Oke Onigbin, along Omu Aran-Ilorin Road, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, around 7:40 pm,” read a statement released by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) sector Public Relations Officer, Busari Basambo, on Saturday in Ilorin, the state capital. Two buses, one made by Mack and the other by Mitsubishi, collided.
Immediately, the on-call rescue squad from the FRSC’s Omu Aran Unit Command was dispatched to the incident.
According to our preliminary investigations, a Mitsubishi space wagon on its way to Ilorin collided with an oncoming Mack trailer as it was passing a bus.
One adult male, three adult females, and four children were killed instantly, and six others were injured to varying degrees, according to the PRO.
According to him, the bodies were taken to a mortuary in Omu Aran.
The investigation, he said, had determined that excessive speed, improper overtaking, and inadequate visibility were to blame for the collision.
